Scholarships for International Students
Scholarships which are available through GSID can be divided into the below Three types:
- MEXT Scholarship, ADB-Japan Scholarship Program, Transnational Doctoral Program Scholarship (You must apply before you enter GSID).
- The JASSO study aid allowance (Gakushu Shorei Hi)
- Aside from these scholarships, there are a number of scholarships provided by private organizations. Such scholarships are either applied to via University recommendation or direct application.
As for 2 and 3, only recommended students can apply because they will be selected within GSID. Most of scholarship programs cannot be applied before enrollment.
Admission and Tuition Fee Exemptions
The tuition fee (Whole or half) may be exempted after the consideration by the university upon the request, if one of the conditions indicated as a student who has difficulties to pay the tuition fee for financial reasons and excellent in the academic record.
The tuition fee exemption (full exemption or half exemption) may be permitted within the budget if a student has difficulties to pay the tuition fee for financial reasons, and if the student’ academic record is recognized as excellent, or if it is recognized that the tuition fee is extremely difficult to pay due to special circumstances, the selection will be made based on the applicant’s application.
Students who are enrolled over the minimum study period (the 3rd year of the Master’s Program or later, or the 4th year of the Doctoral Program or later), are not eligible to apply for tuition fee exemption except for special reasons, illness, childbirth, exchange study abroad etc. For details, please check the university website. If there is a special reason, it is necessary to submit a document about “Inevitable Reason” and supporting documents.

Scholarship that can be applied before enrollment
The Nagoya University Doctoral Education Consortium is looking for scholarships such as the “THERS Interdisciplinary Frontier Next Generation Researcher” and the “Nagoya University Interdisciplinary Frontier Fellowship” for doctoral students. Depending on the program, you may be able to apply even before enrollment. Please check here for details.
