Interdisciplinary Research Workshop: Monitoring Sustainable Development in the Era of AI

On December 14th and 15th of 2023 , the Graduate School of International Development (GSID) and the Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research (ISEE) at Nagoya University jointly organized a research workshop titled “Monitoring Sustainable Development in the Era of AI.” Distinguished speakers for this workshop included leading researchers from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), Institute of Developing Economies, and Hitotsubashi University. The event featured not only presentations but also training sessions for graduate students and discussions on ongoing research projects.

This workshop is part of an ongoing the project titled “Integrating Satellite Images with Socioeconomic Data for Monitoring Sustainable Development,” led by GSID professor Carlos Mendez and ISEE professor Nobuhiro Takahashi. The ongoing project aims to foster interdisciplinary research collaborations, bringing together experts from diverse fields, including space-earth environmental studies, development studies, area studies, economics, data science, and geoinformatics. Funding for the project is provided by the Office for the Development of Interdisciplinary Research Strategy (ODIRS), overseen by ISEE.GSID-ISSE2023-workshop
