About Release of Ph.D. Dissertation

According to the changes in Rules for Degree (Ordinance of the Ministry of Education), all students with doctoral degree granted by Nagoya University after April 1, 2013 must release their “doctoral dissertations” and “summary” via the Internet. Nagoya University registers dissertations in NAGOYA Repository to open them to the public. They will be released within three months after conferment of doctoral degree. They will be also accessible at the National Diet Library.

  • If the University judges that there are unavoidable and special reasons, they can withhold dissertations temporarily or indefinitely and instead release “abstracts.”
  • Even in this case, the full text has to be provided for reference at the request of the public. It will be accessible in the form of electronic data at the public counter of the central library in Nagoya University.
  • It is an obligation for students to release their dissertations after clearing copyright or getting permission from the publisher if you published/plan to publish a book or an article in any academic journal.

*The Nagoya Repository is the university operated system for collecting researchers’ and students’ research outcomes in forms of articles, conference papers and the like and making them available to the world via the internet.

Website for more detail
The difference of “summary” and “abstract
  • A “summary” here means the main points and statements of dissertations
  • An “Abstract” means a short outline corresponding to the structure of dissertation

If you do not release dissertation temporarily or indefinitely, you need to submit “abstract” in addition to “summary.” When your “summary” includes an outline corresponding to the structure, it can be also submitted as “abstract.” You need to use each different forms for “summary” and “abstract.”

Note

A field specified on a diploma is different from person to person by admission year and / or department where you have studied.
The academic degree is “Doctor of Philosophy in International Development” for DID or DICOS entering in 2006 or after, while it is “Doctor of Philosophy” for DICOM students.
